Bobcat Defense
Montana State's swarming defense was the topic Thursday as MSU defensive coordinator Jamie Marshall chats on Thursday

Moderator: Good morning, everyone. It's a beautiful day in Bozeman and Coach Marshall is alongside, so fire away with questions.

Is it just a perception that is out there, or are we really having trouble in stopping other teams on 3rd and long. And if so, why is it such an issue for us?
Thursday November 5, 2009 11:31 HelenaCat95
11:33

JM: I think it's just perception. We are third in the Big Sky in opponent third down percentage, so we've been pretty solid on third downs. Sometimes you just remember the third-and-long conversions longer than you remember the stops, but also if it's third-and-14 and you give up 12 yards, we've still forced them to punt.

We have heard a lot about the LB's not getting their drops deep enough.....have we got this fixed?
Thursday November 5, 2009 11:34 HelenaCat95
11:35
As of the Eastern game, yes, we've fixed that. It has a lot to do with game reps and game experience. Missing Price and Gazzerro hurt us in that area. Clay Bignell has had a good year, but he's just a first-year starter. There have been some growing pains, but he is really coming along.

Can you give us an updated injury report?
Thursday November 5, 2009 11:35 oldcatfan
11:36
Chase Gazzerro and Jeff Price won't play this week. Dane could play some. It's pretty much the same crew as we went over to Eastern with, so everyone that's played the last couple of games should be available.

How is Chris Wilson's development coming along?
Thursday November 5, 2009 11:37 HelenaCat95
11:37
He had an injury for a few weeks early in the season, so that set him back. But he has the tools to be a good corner in the Big Sky.

We have had a shortage of DB's this year, whats the outlook for next year and are we considering a JuCO or transfer this year at that position.
Thursday November 5, 2009 11:38 cats2506
11:39

We've been hit by some injuries, for sure. It's a consideration to look at a JUCO or a transfer, but I'm not saying it's a must. We're still planning on Arnold Briggs coming back next year, so that will be a plus.

Who are the toughest WR's for our DB's to cover....and who are the toughest young Olinemen (i.e., not Hansen) for our DL to handle?
Thursday November 5, 2009 11:39 HelenaCat95
11:43
Marc Mariani at Montana is obvious, we haven't seen him yet. Portland State's receiver, Aaron Woods, is really good after the catch. Ed Berry from NAU did a good job against us. Honestly, we worry more about our own players doing the right things than what individuals from other teams do, unless there's a superstar, like Mariani. I think our two big-name receivers, Elvis and Everett, are two of the best in the conference.

(The question is, do you think Desin will stay on defense?) He'll be on defense the rest of the season, and we'll talk about the long-term situation after the season.

Last game I counted seven starters from Spring ball that weren't playing on defense. Even as great as the players that are out there playing, do you ever wonder what this defense would be like if you were fully healthy. On the flip side you will have a lot of experience coming back next year.

I think right now you can't think about what could have been. After the season is over we'll count up all the guys that were there in the spring and aren't there now. It's been real encouraging with the new guys stepping in and doing good things for us.

Actually, I was referring to the WR's and OL on our team that our D has to work against in practice.....can I resubmit my question with that in mind? :-)

11:47
Elvis and Everett are very talented receivers. We don't go against our own offense as much at this time of year. Jeff Hansen up front is an obvious guy.

ISU took the opening KO off and put on a long sustained drive resulting in a score. That was so uncharacteristic of the Cats D- did the Bengals some out with a game plan that was totally different than what you had seen or was the D just out of sync on that first drive. Obviously the D tightened up and played great, but it's tough to start out in the hole.

The did the same things we were prepared for, but we did not execute. Jody Owens missed a pick-six on the first play that would have put us in great shape, and we had them in third-and-14 and jumped a five-yard route instead of staying disciplined and let them off the hook. We had our chances early in that drive and should have made plays but didn't.

(Editor's note: Idaho State's scoring drive on their first drive was the first time this year a Bobcat opponent has scored on its first drive of the game.)

What positions will the team be focusing on for the 2010 recruiting class?
Thursday November 5, 2009 11:50 GoCats96
11:51
We'll look for linebackers, D-line and DBs. (laughs) Linebackers is a big area for us, with Chase, Price and Harris graduating.

Not really. I drink a couple Red Bulls, that's about it for rituals.

I know it's not a defensive question but who is going to return punts saturday?
Thursday November 5, 2009 11:53 Hawks86

I think it will be DeSean Thomas and Mark Desin.

Will Christian Kelli'i figure heavily into the the dline rotation this week with Cerise being out? What improvements have you seen in Zach Minter play since the start of the year.
Thursday November 5, 2009 11:53 bpcats
11:55
Zach Minter will be on the field more this week giving the other guys a blow. He'll be in the rotation ahead of Christian. We're going through some growing pains with those guys, but they're starting to turn the corner these past few weeks.

Also not a D question, but a question on Bobcat Nation this week- who is the special teams coach?
Thursday November 5, 2009 11:55 GOKATS
11:56

Coach Ash technically oversees the special teams, but each unit has a lead coach so the responsibilities are spread around the staff.

Portland State has a pass happy offense . How important will it be for the guys up front to get pressure, to help out the young guys in the secondary?
Thursday November 5, 2009 11:56 BobcatFan
11:57
Pressure will be huge. However, they run the football a lot more than in the past, so believe it or not, we'll have to stop the run Saturday before we'll be able to stop the pass. They have to big, strong backs. It's like tackling a bowling ball.

Describe a typical day for a Dcoordinator at MSU.
Thursday November 5, 2009 11:58 HelenaCat95
12:01
I get in a little before 7 am, work on some scripts before practice. At 7:30 we have a special teams meeting, full staff at 8:30 and D-staff after that until 10. I finish scripts and cards by 11:30, then get a workout. Kind of. Usually I'll watch a game film instead of cut-ups in the afternoon to get a feel for how the other team goes through its offense in the course of a game. Then we have a special teams meeting and a position meeting at about 2:15 or 2:30. I head out to practice between 3:30 and a quarter to four for our 3:45 practice, then watch practice film as a defensive staff afterwards. Then we usually game-plan situations - red zone, backed up situations, that kind of thing - and work ahead on the next day's practice script and head home around 10.

He'll play some D-end regardless, as well as linebacker in our 30 package.

Moderator: Thanks, folks. I appreciate the great questions, and as long as people enjoy this we'll keep doing it. Secondary coach Noah Joseph is lined up for next Friday at 11:30 am to take more defensive questions, questions about recruiting - the ones he can legally answer! - and anything and everything you want to know about Ohio State football. Go Cats!
