Montana State's Corey Smith advanced to the quarterfinals and Pawel Turzanski to the round of 32 at the ITA Mountain Region Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., on Thursday.
Smith registered a 7-5, 7-6 win over fifth-seeded Mehdi Bouras, UNLV's no. one player, to reach the regional quarterfinal round for the second straight year. Turzanski defeated Weber State's Sasha Kienne, the tournament's 17th seed before losing in the round of 32 to eighth-seeded Luca Barlochi of UNLV (6-4, 7-5). He continues play in the consolation bracket.
"The team has played smart and hard in every match without exception," said MSU coach Mike Phillips. "We've lost some tough matches to good players, but we have some good wins and no bad losses. The guys are competing at a high level this week."
In doubles action, Alberto Fuentes and Fletcher Keyes beat the top team from Utah State, Esteban Ferrero and Myles Perkins beat Idaho State's top and remain in the back draw after beating a tandem from New Mexico State, and Smith/Turzanski advanced to the main draw's round of 16.
