Bobcat Netters Perform Well in Boise

Corey Smith advances to tournament finals
Montana State senior Corey Smith advanced to the finals of the 'A' draw, finishing second place with a 4-1 record, and four other Bobcats won at least one match at the Boise State Invitational October 9-11.
Smith lost only one set in his first three matches, defeating players from Portland State, Portland and Idaho in the preliminary rounds. Smith then rallied for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory of BYU's George Batrakov to advance to the finals. Thomas Shubert, also of BYU, beat Smith 6-3, 6-2 in the championship match.
"This was a really solid tournament for us," said MSU coach Mike Phillips, "with promising results. We competed against the top teams in our region. Corey played very well, we have an experienced team it was great to see the improvement throughout the weekend."
A pair of Bobcat doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals and finished with winning records at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association-sanctioned event. Smith and Pawel Turzanski finished 2-1, beating teams from Idaho and Boise State, while Fletcher Keyes and Alberto Fuentes topped teams from Portland and Idaho before losing to a Portland State duo. Esteban Ferrero and Myles Perkins lost their only match.
In addition to Smith, four Bobcats won matches at BSU. Ferrero finished 2-2, while Fuentes, King Koehler and Perkins each finished 1-1. Turzanski finished 0-2 in singles play.
Montana State's fall season continues this weekend in Bozeman with the Bobcat Open, October 16-18.
